I finally visited the gynecologic oncology specialist this afternoon with Daddy (my husband).

Dr. S. is a mid-age friendly Caucasian guy, who answered all my stupid questions patiently.  I googled Dr. S. before the visit, and it seems that he got overall good appraisal, so I think he should be basically trustworthy.

As what it mentioned in the CT report, Dr. S. said that there is a huge cyst located at my left ovary, which should be benign, although it is not 100% for sure.

Unfortunately, as the tumor is already too huge for laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, a traditional operation would be necessary.  The doctor will cut a vertical line down from the belly button, and remove the left ovary which has been wrapped by the huge cyst.  The stuff that he will take out will be sent to the frozen section.  If the diagnosis shows everything is okay, he would close the skin and finish the operation.

If the diagnosis result shows malignant, Dr. S. recommended removing the other ovary to avoid the bad cell spreading.  Before the operation, either my husband or I would need to sign some documents which specifically indicate whether we want to keep the uterus and the other ovary if they are not involved with cancer, but the left ovary comes with invasive result.

The operation will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours; however, in the case of cancer, it will take longer depending on the situation.  After the operation, I would need to be hospitalized for 2~3 days (4~5 days, if cancer) 。Dr. S. said it’s okay if I prefer to have a second opinion, but I don’t think it is necessary, since my case is not that complicated, besides, the CT Scan result, the family doctor, and Dr. S. all told me the similar story.  Most of all, I want to have the operation as soon as possible, and I started trusting in Dr. S. after the over one hour talk.  But Dr. S. is going to be on a vacation next week (come on, not again!), so the earliest date for the operation would be Aug. 9.  I hung back a while—8/10 is the school information day; every year on that day, I am the one who takes my daughter to school to check the new class, fill in lots of forms, pay lunch money, rent school lockers, and greet to the new teachers—if I will be hospitalized on that day, I am afraid that Daddy may missed something important… But if I miss the 8/9 chance, the next available operation day for Dr. S. would be 8/17.  To be honest, the blowing up belly makes me uncomfortable recently; I had my head in the clouds, and I cannot quit any ridiculous thoughts.  I really don’t want to put it off anymore, but I was unable to make a decision in the sudden moment.

Dr. S. kept emphasizing that I am still young, and from the exam result, his clinical experience, and all other various indications, the result should be benign.  (He even tried to please me by saying that I still look like a little girl).  He also said, even the worst case that he had to remove the uterus and the other ovary, he will have me take some slight hormones to ensure that I will be as cute and young as now.  He even said, without that a few organs will not affect my life.  The atmosphere was warm and sympathetic, and we were just like chatting about a stranger’s house in fire 10 miles away (sorry about the weird example..), I even asked the doctor in ease, “Make sure to stitch beautifully.” Dr. S. smiled and replied, “Sure, I will do my best.”

On our way home, Daddy tried to please me by talking in a pleasant and relaxing tone, and I kept smiling as if nothing was wrong.  However, when I stood in the kitchen to prepare dinner, I could not help crying.  Neither for benign/malignant, or the future scar on the pretty belly, just because that the sensitive moment reminded me of my nebulous past, failure in the present, and unknown future.  The more I thought, the more I felt desperate.

I will not be surprised too much if it’s malignant.  My ancestors had rich cancer history, and a few close relatives all died in cancer.  In another word, I am in the high risk group of cancer.

Daddy has been staring at me softly and dearly as if my days are counted down in numbers, and this is making me chilled….

Our technicians first assembled and tested the motherboard, CPU, memory, and the CPU fan that comes with the original AMD retail package.

They installed the power supply and motherboard bundle onto the case, then all the other components including 1 hard drive and 2  Sony IDE DVD+/-RW were installed.  All cables were then connected.

When the system installation was finished, our technicians started installing the OS and software and performing various tests to make sure the system worked, then performed 48 hour burn-in.

To avoid any situations during shipping transit, all systems were double-boxed, which means we put the completed system inside the original Antec Sonata+ 550 case box, then put the case box into a large durable shipping carton, with shipping peanuts tightly filled in-between.  All the cables, drivers, CDs, and accessories that come with the retail packages will also be included in the motherboard box in the shipment.  A UPS tracking number was emailed to the customer as the package was shipped.

I received the CT report from the hospital by fax this afternoon.  Fortunately, there are not too many medical terms and it’s easy to understand.

The following is the brief of what is listed there:

Indication: Pelvic Mass

Findings: There is a large cystic mass measuring approximately 15 cm craniocaudal, 14 cm AP, and 12 cm transverse.  Mural Nodules identified inferiorly to the right side and anteriorly with the largest nodule measuring approximately 15x 27mm.  This finding is suspicious for neoplasm.  The utorus is tilted towards the right side while the bladder is compressed.  This is likely arising from the left ovary.  There is a cystic structure to the right and posterior superior to the uterus likely representing the right ovary.

Bowel loops are unremarkable.

Small amount of free fluid in the cul-de-sac could still be physiologic given the patient’s age.

Urinary bladder is compress, although no focal abnormality is identified.

No bowel abnormality or appendix abnormality.

No significant lymphadenopathy.

Although what it says in the report is not far from the family doctor’s diagnosis and my imagination, I was still surprised to see it printed in black and white.

Anyway, there is nothing I can do at this moment.  I need to calm down and stop any dramatic guessing game until next Monday’s doctor visit.

We installed the Intel PentiumD Dual-Core E2200 CPU, and the CPU fan that came with the Intel CPU retail box.  A piece of the Crucial DDR2 667 2GB memory was then installed.

We performed a test boot to ensure all the components are working properly.  Customers will receive the assembled MB, CPU, and memory, along with the motherboard box and all the manuals, drivers, and accessories that came with the retail package.

According to the nurse’s instructions, I stopped eating and drinking since midnight.  This morning, I drank the bottle of that chalky contrast (Eer…, it tasted so awful; just like “drinking” the wall), then went to the hospital.  It took approximately 15 minutes for the scan.  I lay down, raised both arms, inhaled or exhaled as requested, and went through that tunnel a few times until I almost fell asleep.

Then I went to work, and reviewed the physician list that the nurse gave me yesterday.  I took advantage of the boss’ meeting to call a female physician; however, I was told that she was on vacation, and would not be back until mid August.  As I hesitated to decide on what to do next, the receptionist said that Doctor S., another gynecologic oncology specialist which located in northwest Atlanta, is way closer to my residence, and if I wanted, she could make an appointment for me.  I checked the list on my desk to make sure that Dr. S. accepts BCBS, the insurance that I purchase, then requested an appointment ASAP.

“The earliest would be next Monday, July 18, at 3:30 pm…”

“What??” I exclaimed. Gee; the clinic really has a blooming business. “Is it possible to make it tomorrow or the day after that?”

“I am sorry, but the schedule is already full until next Monday.”  The other side replied patiently.

Oh, well…, on second thought, the cyst has been in my belly for not just one or two days; a few more day waiting wouldn’t make me die, so I accepted the scheduled time and let it go at that.  After hanging up the phone, I called my family doctor and requested the nurse to fax the CT result to Dr. S and me when they received it.

This customer runs a small business in San Diego, CA and orders a few Shuttle XPCs every once in a while to replace his old mid-tower systems in the office.  Our technicians first review the configuration to make sure that all the components work  without compatibility issues, then email the customer to confirm the order, and let them know that it takes 4~5 business days for order processing, assembly, testing, and 48 hour burn-in.

To start assembling, they removed the case fan and the CPU heatsink fan from the barebone.  They are both Shuttle proprietary components.

They installed the CPU, and then used the Shuttle thermal paste to attach the CPU heatsink fan to the top.  You can click the images to see a larger view.

One piece of the crucial DDR2 800 1GB memory was then installed.

The above is the frame for the hard drive & optical drive.

After the installations for the hard drive and optical drive are completed, they inserted and screwed the frame back to the XPC unit.

As the hardware job was finished, our technicians started installing OS and software and performing various tests to make sure the system worked.  After a 48 hour burn-in with no problems reported, the systems along with all the software, driver, cables and accessories that came with this order were packed and shipped.  A UPS tracking number was emailed to the customer as the package was shipped.

To avoid any situations during shipping transit, all systems were double-boxed, which means we put the completed system inside the original Shuttle Barebone box, then put the barebone box into a large durable shipping carton, with shipping peanuts tightly filled in-between.

The Shuttle SN68S-G2 barebone has been gradually replaced by the latest model SA76-G2, which comes with similar functions and features.  I will hopefully post a new article regarding this new model in the future (if my husband remembers to take pictures. )

I went out this early morning with semi-open eyes, and I was then totally awakened by the scare in doctor’s office….

As per the nurse’s instructions, I laid down, pulled my blouse up to my chest and my pants down a little to show the belly hill.  The doctor looked at me incredulously, as if she was blaming me for not visiting her earlier.

She touched, rubbed, and kneaded that spot for a while, and said, according to her preliminary exam, there is a big cyst covering my left ovary.  Since the size of the mass is huge, an operation would be necessary.

I gaped in amazement without a word.  She continued saying that ovarian cysts are caused by the over-produced liquid around egg cells, which usually happens to females that are in the age with period cycles.  Most of the cysts are benign; at  my age, the chance of malignancy is rare.  Everything should be okay after the operation, but I would have to be transferred to a Gynecologic Oncology specialist, and have a CT Scan (Computed Tomography Scan) before that.

“Do I have to undergo an operation?  I mean…, is there any medicine that can make the cyst shrink or disappear?” I asked, nearly in a begging tone.  I just took the Thin Prep Pap test and a physical exam approximately 6 months prior with no problems found.  The doctor also touched around the belly and stomach during the pelvic exam at that time, and didn’t report any issues – how come it suddenly came out? This is not a balloon!!

”Surgery is the only way, since it is huge. “ She said firmly, then asked me curiously, “Have you felt uncomfortable or anything unusual?”

“Everything is fine, except that my urinary frequency is a little greater than before.”

“The mass might have compressed the bladder.” The Doctor archly smiled, and asked in a joking tone, “You’re sure you are not pregnant, huh?”

Come on! When I sat in the waiting room and filled in the form, I have clearly described that the period just came last week.  I have not had sex for over six month, and I am very sure that I am not pregnant no matter what.  It’s not funny, okay?

The receptionist made an appointment with the hospital for me for a CT scan tomorrow morning, and reminded me to stop by the hospital this afternoon to pick up a bottle of oral contrast that I need to drink before the scan.  The nurses handed me a list of some gynecologic oncology specialists located in the metro Atlanta area, so that I may contact them by myself later.  I went back to the office moping, and I was not in the mood for work.
